Beef Shorthorn in Ireland has taken and upturn. Not only is there a resurgence of interest in Pedigree Beef Shorthorn but also there is a big interest in Shorthorn from the Commercial Breeder. While productivity, longevity and fertility speak for themselves, low cost production is the key to sustained profitability. With decoupling soon to be in place farmers know that cows difficult to get in calf and requiring high cost inputs are not what the future needs. More and more the Shorthorn breed fits the bill.
In the Irish Beef Shorthorn we are looking for an animal with a good top line, width of body and rump, both for ease of calving and from a carcass point of view. The hardiness of the breed ensures fertility and will produce a dam with a constant and adequate supply of milk for her calf. The maternal qualities of the Beef Shorthorn guarantees higher growth rates and faster finishing beef progeny.
The Beef Shorthorn brings to the beef trade a carcass noted for its unique marbleing and distinctive flavour. The Irish Shorthorn Society plan to develop the marketing of Irish Shorthorn Beef. Figures indicate that there is a broad base of breeding cows from which to develop this market. One of the pre-requisites of the market is the provision of top quality sires. The Irish Shorthorn Society is presently working on bringing new Sires into AI, thus providing our members with the ability to maximise on the great opportunities which are developing for the breed in the market place.
