Dairy Shorthorn
I
n the Irish Dairy Shorthorn we look for quality udder, cleanliness of bone, quality legs and feet, and width throughout the frame. The Dairy Shorthorn has many economical attributes. Excellent fertility and ease of calving results in the breed having exceptionally good calving indexes. In Ireland the Dairy Shorthorn has to produce her milk on different types of land. She is hardy and adaptable, her quality legs and feet ensures she can travel anywhere.

The mild temperament of the Shorthorn and ease of handling ensures fast throughput in the milking parlour. The width of frame particularly in the rump area contributes to ease of calving whether it be to our own breed or with a terminal sire. Dairy Shorthorn cows produce an average of eight or nine calves, this longevity contributing to farm profits through lower replacement rate and more stock for sale.

The ability of the Dairy Shorthorn aligned to her natural food conversion efficiently results in her giving yields in the range of 1,200 gallons to 2,000 gallons with protein in the range of 3.3% to 3.6%. The natural protein of the Dairy Shorthorn will help dairy farmers to compensate for rising costs and lower market price. Income is also helped by higher carcase weight for cul cows and better price for surplus calves.
